Confessions of an Artist: Photographing My Work

Confession: photographing my work is one of my biggest hurdles.

I wish I could hand this part of running my art biz off to someone with better skills. But here I am...

Solution 1: has been to buy the right helpful equipment. Best investment yet has been the @shopcanvas.co light + cell phone support equipment. I'm just getting started using it and already I think I'm actually looking forward to the photo and video aspect of my work. Game changer. 🤩 Highly recommend!

Solution 2: figuring out a background that doesn't compete with my little sculptures yet speaks to my aesthetic. I wanted stone. Something earthy, textured and resonant with my animalia and nature inspired work. Couldn't find what I'm looking for yet Especially is winter. So instead I'm making my own.

I love irregular texture and layers that speak to time worn natural or man made artefacts. Wabi Sabi is an important philosophy in my heart of hearts. Thus, this light multi layered background with variable shades of grey and white. I have already made a couple of others including a dark toned one.

Next? Well, we shall see what flows my painting blades 😍

This process of figuring out what helps set off my work well and conveys a bit more of my story is now a rather intriguing adventure instead of an anxiety inducing struggle. Also, I’m much less sweary about the process of photographing my work. Blown disc in my back, arthritis and shaky hands have made a recipe for avoiding putting my work out there in the big wild world. Now, I think it’s actually kinda fun.

Question: Do you have a preference for light or dark backgrounds? And why? I’m curious! Let me know!
